HISTORY
The Western Lime Corporation is the result of the merger of eight
Wisconsin Lime producers, the oldest of which predated the State of
Wisconsin's entry into the Union. The consolidation was essentially
complete by 1921 and the new company was known as The Western Lime and
Cement Co. It claimed to be the largest producer of Magnesium Lime in
the United States with 54 shaft kilns producing 200,000 tons of lime per
year at 11 locations. Today, the descendants of one of the original
families carry on a six- generation commitment to its customers, the
business, and the industry.
The cities and villages of the Midwest were being built and Lime was in
demand for making mortar and plaster. Lime is also required to make
paper and Wisconsin's abundance of water and timber made it the center
of the U. S. paper industry. The Niagara Formation which parallels the
Western shoreline of Lake Michigan provided an unlimited source of pure
dolomitic limestone and over one hundred shaft kilns dotted the
landscape between The Door Peninsula and the Illinois border. Today,
Lime ranks number four on the list of process chemicals and
approximately 20,000,000 tons are produced annually in the U. S. The
Western Lime Corporation still serves the masonry and the paper industry
as well as a wide variety of other users.
Western Lime's corporate office is located in a modern masonry office
building in downtown West Bend, Wisconsin. All non-production functions,
Sales and Marketing, Accounting, Administration, and Environmental
compliance, are based in this office.
The Green Bay Plant produces High Calcium pebble and hydrated lime
from limestone purchased from quarries on Lake Michigan and Huron .The
limestone is delivered to the Green Bay dock in self- unloading lake
vessels. The 1500-foot dock is capable of holding 200,000 tons of
stone. This inventory is necessary to maintain production through the
winter when the quarries are closed and the boats are laid up. The
Company operates two rotary kilns with an annual production of 200,000
tons of Calcium Oxide, and a Lime Hydrator. Calcium Oxide is shipped in
bulk and bulk bags and Hydrate is shipped in bulk, bulk bags or in paper
bags. In total the plant has over 3,500 tons of bulk storage and
warehousing for 30,000 bags. The Plant ships products by rail and truck
throughout the Midwest. The Green Bay Plant's products are marketed
under the brand names, Western High Cal Pebble Lime and Western Pure Cal
Hydrated Lime.
The Eden Plant produces Dolomitic Pebble Lime and Type "S" Pressure
Hydrated Lime from Dolomitic Limestone that is quarried on the plant
property. The Eden rotary Kilns produce 225,000 tons of Dolomitic Oxide
annually. In addition to the kilns and hydrator, Western operates a
blending plant that blends Lime based mortars in gray and over 250
colors. The Plant has bulk storage for 2,800 tons of Lime and
warehousing for 50,000 bags. From this location Western ships material
into thirty-five states. Brand names produced at the Eden Plant are
Western Miracle Masons Lime, Western Type "S","N "and "M" gray and
Colored Mortar Mixes, and Limate, general purpose Lime. Both the Eden
and Green Bay Plants are served by The Wisconsin Central
Railroad.
The Port Inland Plant, produces High Calcium
Pebble Lime from limestone that is quarried on site. The Port Inland rotary
kiln produces 256,000 tons of Calcium Oxide annually. Lime from this plant is
shipped by rail and truck throughout Canada and the U.S. under the brand
name: Western High Cal Pebble Lime.
In addition to the Lime Plants the Company operates seven quarries
producing aggregates, building and landscape stone, rip-rap up to 20
tons and blocks for sawing.
Quality and consistency have become a primary goal. The Company has had
a formal quality control program since 1985. Modern, well-equipped
laboratories are located at each plant. Trained lab personnel monitor
the product from raw materials through the finished product.
The Western Lime Corporation's long history of continuous investment in
technology and its commitment to quality products, the environment and
the needs of its customers are the reasons for its sustained growth and
long term success.
